Chadron, NE -- Missed early opportunities by WNMU let #15 Chadron State steal the momentum and ultimately the game as the talented Eagles cruised to a 35-7 win over the Mustangs in Chadron, NE. The loss drops WNMU to 4-2 (2-2, RMAC) while Chadron remained perfect at 6-0.
The game which was a manageable 10-0 at half-time was all Chadron in the second half as WNMU as the Eagles' Danny Woodhead rushed for 187 yards and added 66 more yard via pass receptions.
Western's Sean Sehnam, who had been perfect on his previous 10 field goal attempts this season, missed from 35 and 43 yards with the wind to his back in the opening quarter.
The Mustangs' only touchdown came early in the final period on a 50-yard romp by Kamalei Magnani (Tucson, AZ/) with a screen pass thrown by quarterback Rod Windsor (Bessemer, AL/Jess Lanier High School).
Chadron State scored its first TD with 11:53 left in the second period on a 29-yard pass to Woodhead, who had been held relatively quiet during the first half with a solid game plan from Western's defense. But as WNMU's offense was turned away for the third time in the first half on missed opportunities, Chadron slowly began taking control of the game and Woodhead went to work.
The Mustangs managed just 48 yards on the ground while Woodhead and Eagles netted 230.
Woodhead, who won the RMAC's 55-meter dash last winter, now has 1,305 yards rushing, 1,524 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns after six games this season. He led NCAA Division II in all three categories entering the game.
Western will entertain Colorado School of Mines Saturday in Silver City. Game time is 12 noon.
